The concept of body piercing
Body piercing dates back to over 5,000 years ago as the earliest mummified remains ever discovered had pierced ears. This practice has been evident throughout ancient cultures in some form or other for thousands of years and the earliest nose piercings were dated back to around 1,500 years ago. Tribal cultures have used piercings for many reasons; in some cultures young men have hung themselves from hooks pierced through their skin in rites of passage, others to show affluence and to separate the classes. Genital and nipple piercing has been evident in ancient Roman and Indian cultures and is still used today for the added stimulation of erogenous zones. It would seem the practice of piercing in western culture has risen dramatically in recent years as the global influences of other customs become more apparent in our society. Body piercing has not only become more accepted, but a mainstream part of our fashion and culture, no longer the domain of the strange, denigrated or culturally misaligned.
The health benefits and issues of body piercing
Generally body piercing has been accepted to have similar effects to acupuncture methods used in Asian cultures since around 100 BC. The main differences are that the effects from piercing can be permanent and piercing practices are not based upon the Qi and meridians accepted by acupuncture practitioners. Today the placement of dermal punctures or surface piercing can be almost anywhere on the body. However there have been some studies into the effects of piercings and how they can enhance our spirituality. Areas on the ears and nose have been reported to be uplifting and cleansing. There is also the Daith piercing that has been very helpful to sufferers of migraines and major headaches.
There are however some important things to remember for your own safety when having piercings done. Your body is a closed system and opening it up can allow bacteria to cause major infections. If your piercer is inexperienced or uses unhygienic practices they may pierce through arteries, nerves or any other important and sensitive areas in your body or give you a very nasty bacterial infection all of which can cause permanent damage and even death.
