Teen Misty from Yellowjackets Looks Absolutely Stunning in Real Life

Sammi has a distinct beauty look, but she has style overlap with Misty

The physical differences between Sammi Hanratty and Misty Quigley are so noteworthy that casual “Yellowjackets” fans might not recognize the actor at first glance. While the ’90s teen is an awkward, curly-haired blonde with brown eyes, Hanratty is a blue-eyed, glossy-haired brunette with palpable confidence. The star’s penchant for makeup also sets her apart from her TV counterpart, as the Arizona native has sported vibrant beauty looks over the years while her on-screen character consistently keeps things simple and monochrome. Hanratty actually brought fans along to her on-set transformation in a behind-the-scenes video for Season 3, showing off her dirt-mimicking makeup and nails.

Differences aside, Hanratty has revealed that she does have some style overlap with Misty, who’s outfits often feature retro graphic tees and sweaters. “I wish there was more of a difference between me and Misty’s style,” she lightheartedly told Variety. “There have been moments on set where I have shown up one of our castmates, Mya [Lowe], she literally goes, ‘Oh my God.’ She was like, ‘Your wardrobe looks so clean today!’ and I looked at her [and] I said, ‘Maya, this is my outfit!'” The Hollywood figure describes her personal sense of style as casual and comfort-based, explaining that she likes to wear sweats or baggy tees tucked into jeans, neither of which feels too far off from Misty Quigley.

The Yellowjackets star is treated differently when she looks like Misty

The differences between Sammi Hanratty and Misty Quigley go beyond the surface, as the actor has talked about how she’s treated differently when she looks like her TV character. She opened up about her negative experiences when being interviewed by Christina Ricci, who plays the adult version of the character, for Interview Magazine. “I was definitely treated differently when I was in hair and makeup and wardrobe,” Hanratty said, revealing the anxiety it caused her. “I got more self-conscious, and my walk even changed a bit. I just felt like a bigger target, you know, as a person.”

While Hanratty can embrace her bombshell beauty in her everyday life, Misty is depicted as a nerdy and socially awkward outcast, with the teen Yellowjacket even saying that she isn’t pretty in Season 1. While the perm ranks as one of the hairstyles from the ’70s and ’80s that are making a huge comeback, the character’s styling is meant to convey her outsider status in the context of her ’90s social group, with both Hanratty and Ricci seemingly feeling the impact when in costume. “I was dismissed, teased more. It was really fascinating,” Ricci told her co-star.

While the two can’t control how they’re perceived as Misty, Hanratty has been open about managing the emotional effect of the show and taking control of her mental health. “I just think it’s really nice to be in a place where I am very open with my mental health, and there’s no real shame or questioning around it,” she told Marie Claire.
