Meghan Trainor’s Full Weight-Loss Journey

2014-2016: Meghan Trainor is a body-positivity role model but still struggles behind the scenes

When Meghan Trainor stepped onto the pop music scene in 2014 with “All About That Bass,” many of her young fans considered her to be a breath of fresh air. After years of a certain body type being pushed as the only beautiful one, Trainor had released a song that questioned the narrative, demonstrating unshakeable confidence. Speaking about her inspiration behind co-writing the record at the time, the Nantucket-born artist revealed that “All About That Bass” was the song she’d needed as a tween. “I was so insecure,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I grew up a chubby girl.” Trainor added that when she was at school, a boy she had a crush on told her she’d be “hot” if she “were 10 pounds lighter,” which she remembered as “heartbreaking.”

She then delved into the effect that comments like that had on her body image, saying that she tried “eating ice and celery,” but ultimately, she couldn’t stick to restrictive dieting. And just as well — crash diets are never a good idea. In 2015, Trainor admitted to Entertainment Tonight that she was still working on her confidence “every day” and that releasing her debut single was “terrifying.” But despite those fears, she stuck to her guns.

In December 2017, Meghan Trainor got engaged to beau Daryl Sabara of “Spy Kids” fame. The following year, she revealed that she’d lost some weight ahead of her wedding and declared her intention to keep up her new habits. “I’m working on my health and my fitness,” she said in a January 2018 interview with E! Insider. “I’ve lost 20 pounds the healthy way. I work out and I eat much better food for myself. Just ’cause one day I’ll have kids too … and I want to be the healthiest I can be for those kids.”

2021: Exercise helps Meghan Trainor stay healthy during her first pregnancy

Meghan Trainor and Daryl Sabara tied the knot in December 2018, a year after getting engaged. The couple announced they were expecting a baby in October 2020, and the “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” hitmaker kept up her fitness regime during her pregnancy. Though Trainor doesn’t typically open up about her eating and exercise routine, she did give fans a peek into a pregnancy workout session in February 2021. In the caption of her Instagram post, which showed her doing reps with gym equipment, she shouted out her trainer, Rebecca Stanton, and got real about how fitness was helping her to prepare for giving birth after being diagnosed with gestational diabetes. “I feel SO prepared for this birth/recovery,” she wrote. “I’m so proud of myself and am so grateful for my amazing trainer … It is not easy to get inspired to move with the weird belly pains and the big belly size but I proved to myself that I can/will do anything for my baby!”

The couple’s first child, Riley, was born soon after, so understandably, Trainor’s social media presence quietened down in the following months. But come December, she got candid on her “Workin’ On It” podcast, which she hosts with brother Ryan Trainor, about body image and healthy eating. In the nearly two-hour episode, Trainor spoke with her nutritionist Kristy Morrell about all things gut health, revealing that probiotics had been a game-changer for her. In terms of go-to foods, the star confirmed that she was trying to eat protein, fat, and fueling carbs and fiber in most of her meals, with a standout in her rotation being crispy salmon with asparagus and chipotle mayo.

2022: Meghan Trainor maintains her health journey and gives a new perspective on All About That Bass

Throughout 2022, Meghan Trainor returned to Instagram to document parts of her health and fitness journey. In January, she shared on the social media platform that she enjoys the mental health benefits of exercise just as much as the physical benefits. “Working out is one of my favorite ways to get out of my own head,” she captioned the post, which showed her lifting weights while squatting. “For 2022 I wanna put more time into ME for my mental health,” she added. Over the following months, she lost more weight, and by October, fans were flocking to the comment sections of her posts.

In one carousel of photos from Trainor’s trip to Australia, she was seen with a thinner physique. Many fans were positive about the transformation, leaving comments like, “I see beauty on the inside and out, you make me feel you have a good soul,” while others were blunt with their curiosity. “How did she get so skinny so fast??” one Instagram user queried. That same month, Trainor revisited the body-positivity element of her brand, admitting in an interview that the confidence she displayed in songs like “All About That Bass” was disconnected from how she truly felt about herself. “I was like, ‘Let’s just be confident in our skin,’ which is so opposite of what I felt,” she recalled to CNN.

Just a month later, the star told Entertainment Tonight Canada (via the New York Post) that she’d lost 60 pounds after her pregnancy by working out every day and concentrating on healthy foods and smaller portions, aiming to lose a sustainable pound a week. She also echoed a sentiment she’d expressed years earlier — that she was trying to be in the best shape for her son.

April 2023-September 2024: Meghan Trainor gives fans another glimpse into her exercise commitment

At the beginning of 2023, Meghan Trainor and Daryl Sabara shared with the world that they were expecting again, and throughout the start of the year, fans got glimpses into the star’s pregnancy 2.0 exercise regime. In April, she shared an Instagram video showing a few of the exercises that she was doing with her trainer, Rebecca Stanton, who happened to be pregnant at the same time. In June, she posted another video showing her pregnancy workouts with Stanton, which included using dumbbells and resistance bands, before welcoming second son Barry at the start of July. Another June post showed that Trainor had consistently worked out through all three trimesters with her trainer by her side.

Understandably busy with two kids and a thriving music career, Trainor posted a little less frequently for the rest of the year, but she confirmed in an April 2024 reel that she had continued exercising after giving birth. Nine months after having her baby, she was sporting a smaller figure, and by July, fans were taking notes. Trainor posted a video in a corset from the set of her “Whoops” music video, which attracted both positive and negative comments. “Body ody ody,” wrote one user. Another asked, “Can you please share how you look so g****** good after having two kids?”

In August, the singer and her trainer posted a video detailing her workout, which featured lots of core-based work. Again, many fans showed their support for Trainor’s achievements, noting that she made the circuit look easy. And in case anyone had any doubts about how strong Trainor had become, she flashed her toned abs in another photo carousel from September.

October 2024-Present: Fans notice Meghan Trainor’s changing body as she opens up about self-love

In the last quarter of 2024, Meghan Trainor’s health journey was officially on everyone’s radar. Toward the end of October, she posted another photo showcasing her ripped abs, leaving fans in awe. Unfortunately, Trainor’s new look also attracted criticism. “What happened to not being a size 2 being okay…?” one user commented.

To clarify, Trainor had spoken about weight loss as far back as 2018 and had constantly posted exercise videos in the years between. But for people just tuning in, the dramatic transformation led to accusations of Ozempic use. Trainor didn’t respond to the claims, allowing her years-long health transformation to speak for itself. She later explained to Today in December that she lifts weights three times week — and clearly no longer believes the most persistent myths about weight training.

In March 2025, Trainor shared photos from an all-white photoshoot. Once again, the comment section was full of Ozempic accusations, but her fans came to her defense. “Women putting another woman down in the comments is absolutely insane to me.. she looks gorgeous,” one shared. Speaking to USA Today, the “Whoops” hitmaker revealed that she’s also undergone breast augmentation surgery as part of her journey toward self-love. She reiterated that the image of self-esteem she portrays is less about infallible confidence and more about working towards self-acceptance. “Every time I get asked about, like, ‘How are you so confident?’ I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m not,'” she confirmed. “Writing these songs is just my therapy for trying to love myself more.” As women’s looks continue to be subject to scrutiny, celebrity weight-loss transformations will always attract both good and bad attention, along with misinformation.
