Victoria Beckham’s Most Controversial Wedding Guest Outfits

In 2005, Elton John celebrated his civil union to David Furnish in the town of Windsor. Guest Victoria Beckham turned heads in a red dress and leopard-print shrug. Unfortunately, the Roberto Cavalli dress didn’t leave much to the imagination, making the singer’s tanned physique the star of the show on someone else’s big day. The red gown came from the shoulders to the pelvis in a V-shape, with a few bands of fabric going around her torso. When John and Furnish officially wed in 2014, she wore a much more demure black dress. 

While we are here for wedding guest outfits that are not just dresses, we’re not sure that Victoria Beckham’s tutu skirt and sheer top fit the brief exactly when it comes to appropriate guest attire. This was her first of two looks for the Italian wedding between Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, who is a longtime friend of the Beckhams. While Victoria’s feminine outfit was flirty and fun, it doesn’t scream wedding guest to us — more like show-stopping costume.

For the second wedding guest look Victoria Beckham wore for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ 2006 nuptials, Posh Spice changed into a form-fitting black strapless tea-length dress. While the question “can you wear black to a wedding?” is a resounding yes (if it’s appropriate), that isn’t what made this look feel inappropriate for a wedding guest. It’s the hat. This felt like something that would be more appropriate at a horse race, or at the very least, a royal wedding. And what about anyone sitting next to or behind her? Talk about distracting.

Navy seems to be a preferred wedding-guest dress shade for Victoria Beckham, who wore it to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s royal wedding in 2011, when she was pregnant with Harper Seven Beckham. So it’s not a huge surprise that she wore the hue to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2018 Windsor wedding. It’s just that it felt a bit blah and boring; she’s been there, done that. And the full cutout slit at the chest … appropriate for a daytime royal wedding? We think not.

In 2022, Victoria Beckham found a new favorite wedding-guest dress style, which she wore in different shades. First, she wore the negligee-esque gown in white to friend and Vogue editor Edward Enninful’s wedding shindig in February. The theme was black and white, but we still stamp this look as questionable because the number-one no-no for wedding guests is not to wear white. She wore a similar slip to her son Brooklyn’s wedding to Nicola Peltz in April, in a silvery-blue hue. Later in 2022, she posted a photo of a close-up of the dress. She looked lovely, but really, does a slinky lingerie-inspired dress feel right for the mother of the groom? It felt a little too sexy for this event.
