Short Hairstyles That Might Age You

How to rock a bob or pixie haircut without looking older

If a bob or pixie is calling your name, don’t worry — there are ways to rock the haircuts without looking older than you are. Jennifer Korab explains that while a chin-length blunt bob or a pixie can age you, with minor changes, they can look modern and youthful. “If you’re going for a bob, try adding some soft layers or face-framing pieces to break up the bluntness,” she suggests exclusively to us. “Adding either a side part or curtain bangs can also help soften this look.” The expert adds that you can make the cut more youthful and modern “by adding dimension through highlights or balayage.” Basically, avoiding the bottom heaviness that is often associated with a blunt bob haircut is key, and adding movement to your hair creates an effortless and chic look.

If you want to rock a pixie haircut, the expert suggests not going ultra short so that you can still have some layers. “For a pixie cut, add textured layers to give it more movement and shape,” Korab says. “Keeping the edges soft and playing with a fun or flattering hair color can really elevate the style and give it a fresh, youthful look.” And learning how to style a pixie cut for every occasion is crucial, as the short haircut does need some styling skills in order to look its best.

These short hairstyles won’t have an aging effect on you

If you’re open to other short hairstyles that will make you look young and modern, Jennifer Korab explains that not all shorter styles add age to your look. One of the looks you should consider is a textured bob, or as mentioned, a bob with layers. “It adds volume and movement while still being easy to style and it’s flattering on a wide range of face shapes,” she tells us exclusively. The best part of this bob is that, unlike the classic structured blunt bob, a piecey one allows your natural hair texture to shine, which means you’ll need less time styling it. In fact, if your hairdresser considers your natural hair texture while cutting it, you should be able to just wash your hair and call it a day.

Alternatively, if you prefer going even shorter or keeping it a tad longer, Korab suggests considering a bixie or a modern shag. “These styles are full of texture and the soft layers around the face help highlight your features in a flattering, modern way,” she says.
