Lady Gaga’s Eyebrow Evolution Through the Years

When Lady Gaga rose to stardom in 2008, she looked nothing like her pop-music counterparts. While artists like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift went for softer, feminine looks, the native New Yorker had more of an edge to her that was born out of playing in hip Manhattan bars. When she released “The Fame,” Gaga’s makeup was super creative and experimental, which included bleached brows that matched her platinum locks.

Gaga kept up her signature look of heavy blunt bangs and disappearing eyebrows that year, which she wore in her “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” music videos. Her fringe often covered her brows, so they didn’t stand out as much as the dramatic falsies and the lightning bolt she often drew over one eye. However, it was clear that her love of bleached brows started that year, so it was no surprise when she began experimenting with different shades throughout the following years.

In 2009, Lady Gaga continued riding the high of “The Fame” and switched up her look by getting rid of her eye-skimming bangs and straight hair. Instead, she went for a tousled bob in a more silver hue, which she wore in her “Bad Romance” music video. Her makeup was still bold, but she softened her eyebrows with a medium-brown shade close to her natural hair color. They were still on the thin side, with Gaga barely filling them in.

Over the next few years, Gaga experimented with different hairstyles, with many of them being wigs. However, she kept her eyebrows fairly tame, going slightly darker and thicker in 2012. She was seen at the launch of her perfume, Lady Gaga Fame, in London, England, with auburn hair and a super-sharp cat eye. The Mother Monster had filled in her brows for a more structured look that matched her sleek makeup, but they were just drawn in enough to give her that perfect soft glam look.

Lady Gaga’s “Artpop” era entered the scene in 2013, and for it, she went back to the bleached-brow look, though it wasn’t as light as her earlier days. She kept them soft and natural with a hint of warmth that kept the focus on her eyes and amazing bone structure. Gaga kept this look for the “Artpop” album launch in Berlin, Germany, that October with a platinum bob and slightly orange-hued eyebrows, as well as in her music video for her single “Applause.” Despite her elaborate look on the “Artpop” album cover, Gaga shared with 92.3 Now (via Audacy) that she wanted to be more stripped down for “Applause.” She told the hosts, “With this song and video, I wanted to be the most me that I’ve ever been before, and I wanted to really show my diversity as a performer, that I’m able to be avant-garde and interesting without lots of makeup and wigs.”

Gaga kept the same aesthetic at the 2016 Academy Awards, where she was nominated for her song “Til It Happens to You,” which was featured in the documentary “The Hunting Ground.” Again, her brows had a subtle orange hue that appeared to be slightly filled in with a powder. Earlier that year, she told Vogue, “I bleach my eyebrows every day — I like to keep them light. They’re more versatile for a beauty look. You can draw [your eyebrows] any way you want when they’re bleached.” It’s no wonder Gaga is such a chameleon when it comes to her brows!

Years before big and bushy eyebrows were revitalized in 2022, Lady Gaga mastered the fluffy brow trend in 2017. Gone was Gaga’s faded bleached look, and instead, she darkened them to a deep brown for the “Gaga: Five Foot Two” premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. With her blond hair and wispy bangs, the “Born This Way” singer channeled disco icon Debbie Harry. To accentuate her strong brows, Gaga wore long, spiky false lashes and a green shimmer shadow on her inner lids.

Gaga went even bigger and bolder in 2019 for the launch of her makeup brand, Haus Labs. We wouldn’t be surprised if her look was the work of makeup artist Sarah Tanno, as her makeup was as impeccable as always. Gaga had her brows swept up and filled in boldly with an almost-black color. The structured look perfectly complemented her sharp over-exaggerated cat eye, which extended up toward the end of her eyebrows. That night, she posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, “I am so snatched right now I don’t know what to do.” What exactly she’s referring to is unclear, but we’re guessing it was her fierce makeup.

Before the COVID-19 lockdown in the spring of 2020, Lady Gaga blessed her fans with an outstanding performance at the AT&T Super Saturday Night event before Super Bowl LIV. As usual, her makeup didn’t disappoint, and she’d darkened her eyebrows with an inky black shade that tapered off sharply at the ends. The graphic look went with her super-sharp cat eye that was highlighted by white liner on her bottom waterline and dramatic false lashes. With her electric-blue wig and hot-pink lipstick, the overall effect looked very pop art.

Gaga’s bold brows were back at the New York City premiere of “House of Gucci” in 2021. However, instead of having a cartoonish feel, they were shaped more naturally with a strong arch in the middle. They were filled in with a dark-brown color and brushed upward in the front, with the ends slightly thinned. It seems she was channeling her character, Patrizia Reggiani, who also had dark-brown brows. Gaga’s method makeup was spot-on, but with her own flair, of course.

In July 2022, Lady Gaga displayed her platinum eyebrows in an Instagram video promoting a liquid lip color set from Haus Labs. Her brows looked longer than ever, and she’d brushed them up, which made them appear even fuller. That year, the naked eyebrow trend was huge, with celebs like Gigi Hadid and Nicola Peltz Beckham also sporting bleached brows. Gaga mostly colored in her brows in 2023, but the following year, she went back to the platinum shade.

Gaga’s bleached brows have become her signature look, and she now lightens them to an almost-white shade. On February 13, 2025 — mere days after she landed on our list of the worst-dressed celebs at the 2025 Super Bowl — Gaga shared a video of herself dancing to her latest hit, “Abracadabra,” and her eyebrows were barely noticeable against her makeup-free face and black wig. “This high fashion witch look is giving me reason to live,” a fan commented. 

It seems Gaga is starting a trend, with her fans wanting to mimic her nearly eyebrow-free look. “I’m bleaching my eyebrows and it’s Mother’s fault,” a Little Monster wrote on Reddit. The poster added, “I’ve tried to talk myself out of it for years but I’m taking the plunge today. If anyone’s interested I’ll post updates. Otherwise pls help make fun of me while I bleach my brows bc mother monster won’t stop serving with her blonde brows.” Not many could pull this look off and inspire fans to follow along, but if anyone could, it’s Lady Gaga.
