Bathing Suit Trends to Leave Behind for Summer 2025

Super skimpy, string bikinis

Both Ira Lysa and Dawn Del Russo noted that super skimpy, string bikinis are on the way out of fashion for summer 2025. “We are seeing less skimpy styles. The micro bikini provides minimal support,” Del Russo said. “They don’t have the structure to which modern consumers have become accustomed,” Lysa said.

Though there’s nothing wrong with showing some skin (and it’s important to wear whatever feels comfortable), Del Russo suggested leaning into more vintage shapes and styles. “[Think] high-waisted bottoms and balconette bikini tops. These styles are flattering to many shapes and provide a comfortable fit,” she said.

Ruffled swimsuits

Though ruffles were one of the hottest swimwear trends of 2024, it’s time to swap them for less froufrou pieces. “[Ruffled swimsuits are] playful, yesteryear, but it’s time for something sleeker [and] cleaner,” Ira Lysa said.

There’s still a way to bring texture to your swimwear in a way that’s less outdated, though, via the likes of BMJL’s Ribbed One Piece Swimsuit or Fanuerg’s Ribbed Bikini. “[Wear] textured fabric swimsuits with interesting materials like ribbing, crinkle fabric, and ruching,” Dawn Del Russo said. “[It] elevates the swimwear and can complement the figure.”

Tie-dye swimsuits and bikinis

’90s-inspired tie-dye came back with a vengeance in the early 2020s and the psychedelic, bold print seeped into every corner of the fashion world — including swimwear. But the renaissance is over. “[It’s] a pandemic-era favorite that is starting to feel passé in today’s more polished, refined palette,” Ira Lysa said.

However, there’s still a way to wear prints in the pool, as dark paisley is one of the previously outdated trends returning in 2025. Try Verdusa’s Paisley String Halter Bikini Set or the Tummy Control One Piece Swimsuit in Green Paisley from Holipick.

Novelty prints

We’ve seen a lot of fun print bikinis and swimsuits in recent summers, but the hotter months of 2025 will see designs turn back to basics. “Novelty prints like fruits, writing, or bold patterns were last season and are not resurfacing this season. There is a move towards timeless styles,” Dawn Del Russo said.

However, embellishments are still in and offer a fun way to upgrade your swimwear without making it look dated. “[Wear] straps with embellishments like pearls, crystals, beads, and chains. Carried over from last season are rosette embellishments, adding a luxury element to swimwear,” she added.

Very high-cut bikinis and swimsuits

High-cut bikinis and swimsuits have reigned supreme for years, but summer 2025 will see more variety trending. “Super high-cut legs are on their way out,” Dawn Del Russo said. “The style that is very high on the hip complements a taller, slimmer figure. Women are looking for a suit that flatters without such an extreme cut,” she explained.

Ira Lysa, meanwhile, recommended swapping the previously popular style for more structured one pieces featuring asymmetrical cuts. “Or high-waist two pieces in solid saturated tones,” she said.

Mis-matched bikinis

Countless celebs and influencers have embraced mis-matched bikinis (how could we forget Kendall Jenner’s tiny red top and black bottoms?) but we’re returning to the classic matching aesthetic in a big way this summer. According to Dawn Del Russo, the more matching, the better. “[Think] matchy-matchy sets, bikini tops and bottoms with a matching cover-up to go,” she said. “[Add] coordinating pareos, skirts, and even lightweight tops for a complete look.” The easiest way to be on trend is via a bundle, such as the Jollkichay One Piece Swimsuit with Cover Up or Zaful’s 3 Piece Swimsuits.
