Don’t drown out statement earrings with a bold necklace
The best practice with statement jewelry is choosing one area to highlight. “Statement necklace plus statement earrings is typically a no-go because they’re read in such close visual proximity to one another,” Jordan Stolch exclusively told Women. “They both end up drowning each other out as they call for attention, and neither piece gets its statement moment,” she added.
Stolch went on to explain that you can get away with pairing bold earrings, or a necklace if you’re so inclined, with statement rings or bracelets because there’s enough visual separation between the pieces. This creates more balance in the outfit. “Both items then get their statement moment!” she said.
Whether you opt a statement necklace doesn’t have much to do with the cut or style of your neckline, Stolch added. The emphasis is more on balancing the outfit as a whole. So if you want to play around with big, asymmetrical earrings, try pairing them with a collared shirt, so the visuals of fabric and jewelry don’t compete. As far as your outfit goes, there are a ton of fashion options that can help your statement earrings take center stage.
Don’t let your statement jewelry overshadow your personality
While statement jewelry is a fun way to express yourself, Jordan Stolch told Women it’s important that the look not overwhelm you as a person. There can be a natural tendency for those who have a soft spot for fashion to ham it up, but you want to make sure that you still get to shine through the outfit. “I always tell my students, ‘Don’t let your look be louder than your voice,’ which means be cautious of styling choices that overshadow your personality — and that definitely applies to this topic,” Stolch said in an exclusive interview.
The key is embracing your personal style, but being selective about choosing pieces that can have their moment, Stolch said. One or two elements can shine, but your outfit doesn’t need to be made up entirely of bold things. “Rather than head-to-toe statement clothing and accessories, be intentional with where you want to focus the attention in your look, and allow the rest of your outfit to be the supporting characters,” she added. A few outstanding items, like earrings and a great jacket, are dynamite, but the rest of your look can function to allow those winners — and your personality — to be the real stars.
