The dresses that sparked thousands of gasps
From her very first court appearance, Lindsay Lohan made it clear she was going to play by her rules. As Hollywood lawyer Gloria Allred also told The New York Times, she tells her clients to dress like they’re going to church but Lohan took another route. In fact, some outlets, like TMZ and The Hollywood Reporter, compared her outfit choice to the white dress in the 1992 film, “Basic Instinct,” and the infamous scene where the lead actress, Sharon Stone, uncrosses her legs to reveal she’s not wearing underwear. Although there are many benefits to not wearing underwear, that’s not exactly the point here.
But it wasn’t just the dress that was inappropriate. Paired with black stilettos, sunglasses, and hair that made it look like Lohan had been out partying all night, added an attitude to the entire look. “Somebody who is remorseful is going to want to play by the rules of the courtroom,” jury consultant Jo-Ellan Dimitrius told People in March 2010. “She dresses for roles she might play so, for goodness sakes, why can’t she realize the respect she needs to show in the courtroom and dress as such? To me, it’s all about common sense — and clearly this girl has no common sense.”
While Lohan may have wowed her fans, contributed to the career growth of a young designer, and kept in herself in the tabloid for months, ultimately, her outfits — and this white dress especially — didn’t do her any favors in the courtroom. Looking back it’s sort of iconic, but surprising she wasn’t sanctioned for wearing it.
