The Modern Modification Lifestyle: Doing the Dimple Thing

Dimples are fast becoming an integral part of the lifestyle within the modification community, with more and more dimple piercings coming to the forefront via social media. A favorite amongst up and coming alternative models, the piercings may be kept for long periods of time, or used as a temporary means of creating a permanent mod.

When the “dimple” area of the face is pierced, mild and primarily inconsequential nerve damage can occur, resulting in a permanent indent, or “man made” dimple. This is done purposely by many individuals with the intention of leaving the piercing in only until such an indent is formed. Through artful placement and piercing expertise, some such dimples may appear to have natural origin, while others will be easily recognizable as the purposely created facial modification that they are. To a degree the look of an orchestrated dimple will depend on the individual’s skin health and texture, as well as the amount of time the piercing jewelry was left in before being removed. For many, dimples that have formed before the piercing itself is entirely healed may fade or become more shallow if jewelry is taken out too soon.

Alternatively, persons who have natural dimples may choose to get this piercing to accentuate them. In either case, the piercing is performed in much the same way. A standard dimple piercing will go entirely through the cheek, and is usually worn with a flat-backed post similar to the jewelry used for monroes and labrets. For those who are looking to create dimples where there are none, the most natural looking and well healing spot will be an area sometimes referred to as the “sweet spot.” This is the area where dimples would naturally be on your face, if you had them.

Although the perfect spot may be what most pierced persons go for, a cheek piercing can be performed in a variety of other places, as long as a few simple rules are followed. This type of piercing should always be made to rest in front of the molars, should not coincide with an area where the subject has an overbite, and extra long posts should be used during healing. Even with impeccable aftercare, cheek piercings may take a long time to heal completely, and care must be taken to avoid biting down on the back of the post. Although the dimple isn’t for everyone, those who do choose to take this cheeky plunge seem to be happy and satisfied with the decision to add a little extra cuteness to their features.
