60 Types of Fashion Styles for Men (2022 Outfit Examples)

Multiple portrait of men in various fashion styles.

ThreadCurve

Men’s fashion has gone through a lot of changes throughout history. Once, it was pretty common for men to wear loincloths and not much else. At another time in history, men wore tights. Fashion evolves over time as new styles become popular and new clothing technologies are made available. How many different types of fashion styles for men have you worn…and which ones will you want to try wearing in the future?

Below is an epic list of men’s styles with a photo example of each showcasing nice outfits for guys for each respective style.

Men’s Fashion History

Clothing can be a symbol of status and wealth. Even in the earliest days, cavemen noticed who had the nicest animal pelts wrapped around them. The guy with the nicer pelt was more successful at his job — which, in those days was hunting and gathering — and commanded more respect around the cave. Men’s fashion has been used to stand out and to blend in. During the days of ancient Rome, men wore togas that were basically just fabric draped around their bodies.

Fashion always has some meaning, some message. What messages are you sending with your clothes? What does your style say about you?

Types of fashion styles

Different men’s fashion styles have existed for a long time. Throughout history, different looks have become popular and then faded away so that new trends could come along. All of these different styles have their own inspirations and meanings, their own messages. All of these styles have their own stories. Which of them will speak to you the most?

Artsy

Man in red suit sitting on a bench outdoors.

The artsy look is all about being a little unique, thinking outside the box. This style is used to make a statement, tell the world a little something about who you are. This is a bold, colorful, vibrant style. Experiment and get creative. The artsy style is all about personal self-expression, so use your style to let your inner light shine.

Athleisure

Man in an athleisure look walks the runway.

The athleisure look is everywhere. This is definitely one of the trendiest styles you can possibly wear. All the hottest designers and most fashion-forward celebrities have embraced the athleisure look, which is all about wearing athletic clothing.

What you need

This is the clothing you’d wear to go exercise, though instead of exercising you’re showing off your style. Tracksuits, sweat pants, sneakers, T-shirts, tank tops…well, you know what athletic clothing looks like!

Get stylish

Add some accessories to make your athleisure truly fashionable. A baseball cap and a sports watch will truly complete this look.

Beach bum

Man sitting on a wooden lounger near the beach.

The beach bum look is very simple. It’s sort of a departure from style because it’s a look that’s all about comfort rather than looks. Bright, bold prints like Hawaiian shirt designs, neon colors, and beachy motifs are just right. Shorts, button-up shirts, tank tops, and sandals will give you a beach bum look every time.

Don’t forget your sunglasses, waterproof watch and general laid-back attitude.

Beatnik

Black and white photo of two men wearing black sweaters.

The beatniks were the rebellious young thinkers of the 1950s. Part of the Beat Generation, beatniks followed writers like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, dressed in black clothing and used style to show their anti-establishment values. This is an iconic look that was once the height of style. Now, the beatnik look is a classic.

Get the look

The beatniks weren’t just rebellious youth, they were intellectuals. They talked about poetry and literature and they rejected the men’s fashion norms of the day by dressing in plain, form-fitting black clothing. Turtlenecks, skinny capri pants and straight-leg pants, all in black, help define this style. To really get the look, add a goatee and an attitude that you are deeply, deeply in thought.

Biker

Bearded man in leather jacket sitting on his bike.

Henry Winkler as the Fonz. John Travolta as Danny Zucco. James Dean as…well, James Dean. The biker look is an iconic part of men’s fashion that instantly tells the world you’re a bit of a bad boy. And it seems to pretty much drive women wild. Luckily, it doesn’t take a lot of pieces to create a good-looking biker style. Just remember the essential accessory: a heart of gold hidden by that bad boy persona.

What you need

The essential item for any biker wardrobe is, of course, the leather jacket. The classic biker jacket is usually waist-length and often has many zippers on them to add extra coolness. Gentleman’s Journal recommends a full-grain leather jacket.

Jeans and leather pants are the bottoms of choice for many biker-style wearers. Of course, you’ll need classic motorcycle boots. Channel your inner James Dean and finish the look with a standard white T, or wear a graphic T to express your personality.

Black tie

Man in his tuxedo sitting on a classy couch.

Fancy evening events may have a black tie dress code. This is a fashion style reserved for fancy events and you’ll usually see it at important ceremonies, weddings, big anniversary parties and other gala events. This is a very specific dress code and it only takes one mistake to appear overdressed or underdressed at any black tie event.

What you need

A jacket with silk lapels is a must for black-tie attire. The jacket may have a notched lapel, a shawl lapel, or a peak lapel, so long as the lapels are silk. Wear the jacket with tuxedo pants and a tie. Any tie will do, from a standard necktie to a bowtie to an ascot. You can wear a dress shirt or a tuxedo shirt.

A black tie does not have to be black. You can actually wear a jacket ad pants in any color and the tie itself can be in any color, too, according to GQ.

Get the style

Finish your black tie look with a dress watch, cufflinks and a pocket square to set off the ensemble. Style your hair to make it look neat.

Bohemian

Man in bohemian clothes poses with guitar in his hands.

The bohemian look, or boho, is all about being a little bit outside the box. This style is a little bit quirky and so are you…and that’s okay.

What you need

Boho style is sort of artistic and free-flowing. Bold colors and patterns are a strong feature of this fashion style. Light-colored ripped blue jeans and light-colored slacks, especially pleated trousers, are often seen in the boho look. Colorful button-down shirts and loose V-neck T-shirts are a perfect match. Wear loafers and low-cut shoes without socks and when you’re feeling bold, add a hat with a floppy brim to complete your bohemian style.

Bro

Bearded man wearing a checkered long sleeves polo.

Being a bro is actually an entire lifestyle that involves a lot of sports, hanging with other bros and, seemingly, eating a ton of wings. But there is also a distinct fashion at play when it comes to bro style. Do you know how to capture this look for yourself?

Get the look

Sports gear, including jerseys, is a big part of bro fashion. Hoodies, oversized jeans, shorts and T-shirts are staples of bro fashion. The classic baseball cap is a must, according to GQ.

Business casual

A group of coworkers walking down the office stairs.

Once, it was easy. All you have to do is watch 1940s and 1950s movies and TV shows to know that there was a time when pretty much all guys wore a suit and tie to work. That really made things simple. However, it also made things uncomfortable. In more modern men’s fashion, men have more options.

Business casual has become a more relaxed and yet still professional style. So…how can you walk this line between too casual and too businessy?

What you need

Jeans are too casual and a suit is too formal, according to the Modest Man. Business casual style is about finding the middle ground. Any collared shirt, including polo shirts, is generally acceptable. Dress boots and shoes are fine, including more casual shoes like loafers (but not sneakers).

You don’t need a tie and you don’t have to wear a blazer, but you can add one to sharpen up your look a bit. Slacks, including khakis, are totally fine. However, you should avoid super casual looks like cargo pants.

Business formal

Two businessmen having discussion on the second-level balcony.

If you’re dressing in business formal attire, you need to look snappy. This is attire that is suitable for a very dressy evening event. That means you need to wear a dark suit and a dress shirt with a silk tie.

A notched lapel suit is appropriate for business formal attire. The notch lapel differs from the peaked lapel suit jacket, which is used in formal wear. Add cufflinks and a pocket square to complete the look. It’s the little details that really matter in business formal style.

Casual

Man in casual outfit and shades sitting outside his house.

Dressing in a casual style outfit does not mean looking sloppy. This isn’t wearing your pajama bottoms out of the house. You can dress to be comfortable and casual and still be stylish. There is plenty of stylish casual wear for men ranging many different men’s styles incorporating many men’s outfits.

What you need

Jeans, polo shirts, T-shirts, and casual slacks like cargo pants and chinos are a perfect way to capture casual style. Hoodies, shorts, and knits work fine, too. Feel free to wear your sneakers, topsiders, and shoes without socks.

A white sneaker can really pop against a casual outfit. Capture a stylish and carefree look with suede loafers, a button-down shirt, and dark jeans, as recommended by Luxe Digital. A good casual outfit will help you look stylish anywhere you go.

Chav

Man wearing black tracksuit, white sneakers, and a matching cap.

To successfully capture the chav style, you’re going to need some name-brand tracksuits, white sneakers and a cap to top it all off. And if you’re going to truly be legit and sport this style, you need some jewelry. A flashy watch, a neck chain, maybe a medallion, anything that will catch the eye will do for this men’s fashion trend.

What is it?

This outfit style originated in England in the late 1990s, a style trend that quickly caught flame and became trendy all over the UK. This style is still around and it definitely isn’t going anywhere soon. The chav look is like a designer version of the athleisure look…and it’s perfect for just hanging out and looking good.

Classic

Man in classic suit and glasses sitting on a vintage chair.

A classic style is built around those looks that will never fall out of fashion. It’s the essential elements that create a truly timeless look that’s not exactly trendy but also not dated or retro. And if that sounds really vague and confusing, you’re not alone. Many have trouble capturing a great classic style. Focus on some essential wardrobe staples and you will be able to successfully capture this look.

What you need

A black suit is truly a classic look. The basic black suit isn’t ever going to be out of style and it very rarely looks out of place. Make sure you maintain at least one well-tailored black suit and you’ll have a style for just about any possible occasion. Wear it with a white button-down shirt and a solid tie and you will have an outfit that is stylish and elegant.

Nothing is quite as classic as a pair of jeans. This is a modern fashion staple that everyone needs. No matter which fit you like best, from skinny to boot cut to wide leg, keep a pair of jeans that fit well handy. You can pair this with a light blue button-up, a T-shirt, a pullover sweater, or a polo. All of these options create a classic look.

A couple of pairs of nice-sitting slacks in khaki, like chinos, will take you far. You can wear these for all sorts of occasions and to fit into all sorts of dress codes. Simple, well-fitting slacks are definitely a wardrobe classic.

Complete your classic wardrobe with some essential accessories and shoes like oxfords and loafers. You may want a couple of nice watches to go with your look. Remember, less is more. Choose watches that are elegant and simple in design, choosing something well-made over what’s flashy. When you focus on quality, this will stand out far more than any watch that’s made for the bling factor.

Cocktail attire

man in a black business suit sitting on a white chair

You will see cocktail attire listed on invitations as a dress code…but what does this mean? Usually, wearing cocktail attire means wearing a dark suit, a white shirt, shiny dress shoes and a tie. Jeans, khakis and casual pants aren’t really okay.

Creating a style

If you’re sort of bold with your fashion, you can always try wearing a more colorful shirt. However, don’t pick anything too loud or bright, especially if you’re going to a wedding. You don’t want to be too flashy and pull attention away from the wedding party.

If you want your look to be just a little bit more stylish, you can always add a pocket square and a boutonniere. Why not? If you’re dressing in cocktail style it’s usually because you’re at a party, so it’s okay to have a little fun with your fashion.

Country club

Two golf friends greet each other by touching their elbows.

Dressing for the country club can be tricky. Country clubs are designed to be somewhat exclusive, high-end places. However, you’re also probably there to play golf, play tennis, maybe go swimming or sit and have lunch.

People are wearing clothing for athletics but they’re also wearing clothing that’s appropriate for the county club. What makes it even more difficult is that many country clubs have dress codes! So, how do you capture the perfect country club style that’s elegant and practical?

Get the look

Collared shirts are a must at the country club. Polo shirts and button-up shirts are a necessity. Stick to simple colors and neutral tones, rather than flashy or vivid pieces. It’s perfectly fine to wear shorts and slacks but avoid all denim and cargo styles.

Cowboy

Cowboy rests his head against his hand with hat.

Once a true style staple of the male wardrobe, cowboy style fell out of fashion around the mid-1900s but lately, it has had a strong resurgence. Cowboy hats, boots, and jeans have never left the fashion scene entirely and they’re still frequently seen at county fairs but now, the cowboy look has become much more chic. How can you make this time-honored fashion style look great on you?

What to wear

The jacket is the key to fashionable cowboy style, according to Fashion Beans. Slip into a snakeskin jacket or a suede jacket to really make this look pop. Under it, you’ll want a Western-style shirt.

This means the shirt will have a yoke, which means it will be made in a pattern that provides structure and support across the back of the shoulders and the front of the chest. Natural and neutral colors allow piping and embroidery to stand out. If you want to look more casual, wear a denim or flannel shirt to create a more rugged look.

Of course, you want to finish the look off with a pair of cowboy boots and a cowboy hat. Feeling bold? Add a great Western string tie.

Cyberpunk

Man donning a matrix style look.

The cyberpunk look is seen often in sci-fi movies that take place in a not-so-distant future or an alternate reality. This is a look that’s someone futuristic. It’s almost totally built around black clothing and involves a lot of shiny vinyl and leather. Long trench coats, black suits and black ties with black sunglasses will help you create an amazing cyberpunk look.

Dark academia

Professor holding a pile of books as he looks over his glasses.

The dark academia look is a style that’s really based on dark literary themes. If the works of Edgar Allen Poe could be translated into men’s fashion, what would that look like? The answer is that it would look a lot like the dark academia style!

What to wear

Think about what a literary professor at a cool college would look like. Whatever you’re thinking is probably a great dark academia style. Tweed blazers, pullover sweaters, cardigans, turtlenecks, loafers, corduroys, and thoughtful expressions are essential to dark academia style. Wool, plaid, and dark colors help create a dark academia look, according to College Fashion.

Disco

Man in a disco outfit with pink shirt and matching wide pants.

The disco look is one of the most recognizable and iconic styles of them all. The 1970s are somewhat infamous for having some really bad fashion. But let’s face it: some of those polyester suits still look amazing. And many of the fashions of the disco era continue to inspire new fashion trends today, according to Love to Know.

Get the look

Polyester and spandex outfit styles were big in the 1970s, both being relatively new fabrics. These materials fit close to the skin and often stretch, which allowed for tight, form-fitting clothing. Flared jeans were especially popular at this time as well, fitting very tightly through the seat and thighs and then flaring out below the knees.

The flares became huge during the 1970s, a style that continues to be present in the fashion scene. To balance out the flared legs, the lapels on shirts and jackets were incredibly wide at this time as well. It was hip to leave button-up shirts partially unbuttoned for casual, tie-less looks.

Bold, bright patterns and vivid colors were big in the 1970s. This is when psychedelic looks became popular. Disco fashion was all about the flash and the style, so bold colors were present. Gold jewelry, including fancy wristwatches and neck chains, were perfect accessories for the disco look.

E-boy

Teenage boy sitting on a city street with his phone and glasses.

The e-boy look, also styled as eboy, appeared pretty recently on Tik Tok and it’s made a big splash on the fashion scene.

Get the look

The eboy look is typically more popular with teens and men in their early 20s. It’s a highly trendy look that is a mishmash of style elements from K-pop, skateboarder fashion, gothic fashion, and even punk. Black skinny jeans are a cornerstone of the eboy look. You will also see T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts layered on top of button-up shirts. Sneakers are the footwear of choice. Neck chains and watches are frequent accessories for the eboy look.

Emo

A teen boy with beanie, black jacket, and pants standing in an abandoned area.

The emo look is a subculture style that’s inspired by emo music. The music is characterized by dark emotions and the style attempts to capture this through fashion.

Get the look

Vintage styles and band T-shirts are a big part of the emo look. Plaid button-up shirts are popular as well. As for pants, stick to form-fitting cuts. Emo clothes typically fit close, so keep some skinny jeans handy. Dark colors, particularly black, are definitely emo.

Canvas sneakers and combat boots are popular ways to complete the emo look and finish an outfit. Stick to classic shoe styles, in keeping with the vintage-inspired emo style. Messenger bags are a popular accessory for the style. Piercings and highly stylized hair are also common emo elements, according to WikiHow.

European

Man in polo and shades walking in European city.

European clothing and American clothing are very, very different. European fashion tends to be a little more conservative and a little less casual than everyday American fashion. Wearing workout clothing is very fashionable in the U.S., for example, but this is not done in Europe. The only time yoga pants are worn in Europe is when you’re actually doing yoga.

With a few style tips, anyone can create a European look that will look totally at home on the streets of Paris.

How to get it

Avoid wearing lots of bright colors, graphics and American labels and sports team apparel. Instead, dress in more muted colors like gray, navy and black and wear simple clothing. Well-fitting slacks and jeans (known as trousers in Europe), comfortable walking shoes and a button-up shirt can take you anywhere. Add a blazer or a trench coat as needed and create a little extra flair in any outfit with a scarf.

Geek

Geek man with his hands on his waist.

Once, it was an insult to call someone a geek. Now, it’s what lots of people want to be. The geek look, also known as geek chic or geeky, has exploded into popular fashion. There are many ways to capture the geek look and be fashionable at the same time.

What you need

When you’re going for a casual geek outfit look, any graphic T-shirt that relates to geek culture will do. This can be a shirt that references any popular sci-fi or comic book franchise. For a less casual look, a classic button-up shirt in any color will work. Top your button-up with a cardigan or a sweater vest to really get that geek chic look, according to Jos. A. Bank.

Slim-fitting slacks are pretty much a must for this look. Corduroy slacks in darker hues like brown or black are truly geek chic and evoke a sexy college professor vibe.

Don’t forget the accessories. Suspenders, glasses and neckties are all go-to additions for the geek chic look. A bow tie really adds flair to a geek look. Finish the look with slip-on shoes or tennis shoes…no socks.

Glam rock

Long-haired young man with black hat sitting on a deck.

Glam rock appeared in the 1970s, when rock was becoming more stylized. So was its fashion. Glitter, makeup, leather and studs characterized the glam rock look, which became a style staple of acts like Poison and Motley Crue.

Vibrant colors, highly structured hairstyles and lots of glitter and bling add the “glam” to the glam rock look, which is built around skinny jeans, black leather jackets and tank tops.

Goth

Man in a goth outfit sitting on a concrete surface.

The goth look, also known as gothic and gothic revival, is about personal expression as much as it’s about fashion. This look embraces the dark and the macabre. Those who wear this look are often regarded as being sad.

However, the goth look is really about embracing one’s own dark side and expressing through fashion that they aren’t afraid of the darkness. Now, how can you capture the look and wear it well?

What to wear

To get the goth look, get a lot of black clothing. Black skinny jeans or leather pants with a long black trenchcoat will quickly give you a more gothic look. Black boots are a must. The shirt can be used to express anything you want.

Wear a dress shirt with ruffles to pay homage to the classic Victorian goth look, choose a black mesh shirt to honor the 1980s punk trends, or wear a graphic T-shirt representing a band or some other pop-culture element you enjoy.

The goth look is often accompanied by black hair and black makeup, even on men. Think about Jared Leto while he’s performing with 30 Seconds to Mars. Black eyeliner is a frequent accessory for gothic guys. Studded black leather wristbands and neckbands are also popular.

Grunge

Teen in a hoodie standing against a brick wall.

Where does the grunge fashion style come from? Anyone who was alive in the 1990s remembers when the grunge look and grunge music sound basically took over all of pop culture. This is when icons like Kurt Cobain reigned supreme and when flannel stretched as far as the eye could see.

But how did this trend start and how can you make it look fashionable in men’s style today?

A history of grunge

The word “grunge” has been around since the 1960s. Then, it was a popular slang word among teens to mean dirty or sloppy. But the word took on a brand-new meaning thanks to Jonathan Poneman.

He was the founder of Sub Pop, a Seattle record label. It was the late 1980s and Poneman was working wi t a stable of musicians who would soon become the stars of the music scene.

The artists on his label had a distinctly Seattle sound, music that wasn’t like anything else out there. So when he was promoting his label to local journalists, he sent out a press kit calling the sound “grunge.” Little did he know he was making both music and fashion history.

What you need

Grunge fashion was born. The look was really about going against popular fashion, dressing down instead of dressing up. The clothes had a thrift store look and sometimes even a threadbare appearance.

Hair was tousled, shirts were untucked and everyone was loving the super casual look that rebelled against the preppy, yuppie, structured looks that had flowered in fashion in the 1980s.

Marc Jacobs legitimized grunge as real fashion in 1992, when his collection captured a high-end grunge aesthetic. Ever since, designers have been playing with the look, according to Fashion Beans.

To capture grunge fashion, you really want clothing that is somewhat baggy. Large jeans, T-shirts, and flannel shirts are truly the basic uniform of grunge. Cardigan and pullover sweaters are always a great additional layer.

T-shirts, particularly T-shirts celebrating various rock bands, are a must. Ripped, worn jeans are quintessentially grunge. Skateboarding shoes often accompany the look. And if you want to be super authentic about it, don’t forget that classic chain wallet. A knit cap won’t do you any harm in grunge fashion, either.

Heavy metal

Long haired guitarist making a rock hand gesture.

Heavy metal music definitely has its own distinct look. Many types of music helped to inspire various fashion looks, such as the disco look of the 1970s, but you can’t even hear a heavy metal song without thinking about black leather, spikes and hair. That’s right. Lots and lots of hair.

The style

The heavy metal look, also known as the metal head look or metalhead, is synonymous with 1980s pop culture but this style has its roots in the late 1960s and a totally different culture of rebels. The biker style was all the rage in the 1960s, aided by hit films like “Easy Rider.”

This look inspired the early heavy metal bands of the 1970s when bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest wore lots of leather jackets and metal accents while performing their music on stage. They wore studded leather wrist bands, leather pants or jeans, leather jackets, and the attitude of being a badass.

Heavy metal fashion was born. The long hair was that so much in fashion in the 1980s gave the heavy metal look a somewhat different style from the more clean-cut biker style of the 1960s. Metal spikes and studs added a newer, harder edge.

Distinctly 1980s trends, such as kilts, graphic band T-shirts, ripped jeans, and a general fascination with cutting the sleeves off of shirts, gave heavy metal its own look that separated it from similar fashion trends, including punk.

The heavy metal look is still very much a part of pop fashion…though sometimes it’s a little harder to pull off that 1980s hair.

Hip hop

Group of young people in hip hop outfit posing together.

Hip hop took the music world by storm not just for the way it sounded, but also because of the way it looked. The fashion of hip hop is eye-catching and flashy by nature, bright and colorful. The look is exciting and energetic, just like the music. Also, like the music, hip hop fashion blends different style elements together to create a look that’s truly unique.

What you need

To create hip hop style, invest in some key pieces of fashion. Athletic wear, including tracksuits and sweatpants, plays a big role in hip hop fashion. Clothing that supports various sports teams, including player jerseys, are also a big part of the look.

It’s also common to blend in high-end and pretty fashion elements with the more casual features of the hip hop style. For example, many hip-hop-style icons wear tracksuits with lots of flashy jewelry like chain necklaces, wristwatches, and big rings.

Name-brand sneakers in bold colors and designers are another main feature of the look. To create a more dressed up hip hop style, wear a leather jacket over a designer T-shirt.

Hippie

A hippie in sunglasses sitting on the beach sand.

Loose, long, flowing clothing is at the heart of hippie style. This look became incredibly popular in the 1960s and left a long and lasting impression on the fashion scene. Staples from the hippie look, like bell bottoms and peasant skirts, continue to be a strong part of the style world to this day.

Get the look

Hippie fashion in the 1960s was all about loose, unstructured silhouettes, neutral colors, and natural fabrics. But the look caught on in the fashion industry and began to take on new looks. The billowy, wide pants became more shapely as bell bottoms.

The clothing became more colorful and the fabrics got finer. Today, the hippie look is typically highly stylized, well-fitted, and colorful. But the original look was very light, airy, natural, and neutral. Stick with classic elements like bell bottom and wide-leg plants, loose-fitting shirts in button-up or tunic designs, and moccasins to create this look effortlessly.

Hipster

Bearded hipster holding a cup of coffee while using his phone on the other hand.

The hipster look is absolutely everywhere and all the men’s style icons are borrowing from the trend. This is a button-up look that’s associated with youth culture and environmental consciousness. So how can you show off this style?

Get the look

If you want to look like a hipster, get some skinny jeans. Right now. Glasses are another very common feature of the look. Colorful socks, T-shirts and scarves are common style elements. Beards, particularly long beards, have become another big part of the hipster look, according to Real Men Real Style.

Indie

Young man in checkered jacket sitting outdoors.

Indie movies are movies that aren’t made through a big studio and usually, without a lot of money. Indie music is the same way. It’s artists putting out music on their own, without the benefit of a well-known label. And indie fashion is a way to visually capture this spirit and this love of the indie art forms out there.

Get the look

To dress indie, forget about the fashion trends and stay away from the name-brand labels. Shop at the thrift shops and vintage stores. Stick to classic pieces and traditional looks. Mix and match different style elements. Indie is all about being an individual, so wear what you like.

Ivy League

Portrait of a man donning an Ivy League look.

The Ivy League has its own prestige and its own look. The Ivy League look, also known as ivy style, is definitely its own style and it’s one that tells the world you are conservative, educated…and probably from New England.

Get the style

Suits, slacks and blazers, striped club ties and loafers are all part of the fundamentals of the Ivy League look. Cardigans, button-up shirts and polo shirts are all staples of this style. Khaki pants and penny loafers are pretty much a requirement, according to Gentleman’s Gazette. Knit ties, herringbone jackets and school sweaters are all classic elements of Ivy League look as well. Use them to create great style.

Kodona

Man in kodona outfit sits on the street.

The kodona style comes from Japan. This is the male counterpart to the popular Lolita look, which is heavily influenced by the Victorian styles of the past. This look is built around shirts and knickerbockers that look like Victorian-era clothing. Short pants and knee socks are common elements of the look, along with top hats and newsboy caps.

Military

Masculine man wearing a military style clothes.

You can hold onto something for sentimental value and you should definitely keep some old work clothes handy, but don’t wear these items out in public. Wear only clothing that is clean, well-maintained, and free of visible signs of wear and tear. The only exception to this, of course, is distressed pants, jackets, and shirts that are meant to look worn. Fashion is strange, sometimes.
  2. Make sure it fits. The most important aspect of what you wear isn’t how it looks. It’s how it fits. Every single item you wear should fit well. Prioritize a good fit every time because this is truly going to help you look and feel your best. If you don’t feel comfortable, you won’t be stylish.
  3. Keep yourself well-groomed. Get regular haircuts and keep your facial hair neat and trimmed. Pay attention to your personal hygiene. Take showers and wear cologne to keep yourself smelling nice. Use the product on your, like pomade, as needed to keep your hairstyle looking good. Curly hair and long hairstyles may take a little extra time, as compared to other men’s hairstyle options. Some men style their beard, too, and keep up a strong beard style game.
  4. Follow the trends. Pay attention to menswear style trends. Follow popular celebrities on Instagram to see what they’re wearing and get outfit ideas. Even if you don’t buy the designer label prices, you can wear similar items and copy the styles you see.
  5. Build a classic wardrobe. It’s a good idea to follow the trends, but you also want to maintain a wardrobe containing several solid, classic choices. The simple suit, for example, is an enduring style staple that every stylish man needs.
  6. Keep your footwear clean. Your shoes should be cleaned and when necessary, polished. When your shoes become visibly scuffed and worn, get a new pair. People often look at shoes first, so it’s important to make a good impression on yours.

All of your clothes should fit perfectly so they look tailored to your body, even underwear. This will immediately make them look more expensive. Strive for an absolutely perfect fit and alter items as needed to get it.

Choose good fabrics. Silk and cashmere are known to be expensive but you could go broke trying to get a wardrobe with items made from these materials. Instead, choose clothes made in materials that are affordable but have a high-quality, expensive look to them. Linen, faux leathers and premium cotton all look really great and feel nice to the touch but they’re all very affordable materials.

Invest in accessories. If you get one designer item, such as a watch, it will elevate your entire outfit. A pair of designer sunglasses or shoes has the same effect.

Cheat! If you want clothing that looks expensive, hit the thrift shops. With a little digging, you can often find a couple of designer items that are gently used. And once a designer item is a couple of years old, it suddenly becomes retro and therefore, it’s stylish all over again. You can sometimes find designer shirts, pants, suits and ties hiding in thrift shops.
