Anne Hathaway’s tribute to Andr\u00e9 Leon Talley fell flat<\/h2>\n

Anne Hathaway’s outfit was boring on its own, but when you peek into her “inspiration,” it somehow gets worse. If you missed it, Hathaway told Vogue that she and Carolina Herrera “wanted to make Andr\u00e9 Leon Talley scream in heaven. We wanted him to scream ‘glamour.'” But here’s the problem: Talley was a stylist famous for bold, unapologetic fashion. He loved capes, sweeping layers, dramatic silhouettes, and larger-than-life statements. He even famously said, “The cape is my thing. It’s what I do best. I love the drama, the fantasy, and the elegance it brings to an outfit” (via The Walk Mag).<\/p>\n

That’s why other stars who channeled Talley this year \u2014 like model Ugbad Abdi, our heartthrob Coleman Domingo, and singer-songwriter Teyana Taylor\u00a0\u2014 all came in capes. Meanwhile, Hathaway showed up in a look that had no capes, bold patterns, or drama. She wasn’t one of the 2025 Met Gala guests in dated colors, but her look did lack personality. This was a major fail because everyone knows if you’re going to honor a legend, you go big or go home. She may have been trying to play it safe, but it turned out a lot worse than ending up on the 2025 Met Gala’s worst-dressed celebs list.<\/p>\n

Hathaway’s outfit seemed more like a tip of the hat to Sharon Stone’s iconic 1998 Oscars look. But if this had been her initial aim, she wouldn’t have mentioned Talley, and we figure she’d have at least tried to take some tips from Zendaya, who reimagined Stone’s ‘fit at the 2022 Oscars and did an amazing job. Given the vast inspiration available to “The Devil Wears Prada” star, her outfit was disappointingly lackluster.<\/p>\n

Beyond Anne Hathaway’s white top and black-and-gray skirt, she wore a large Bulgari necklace with sapphires, white gold, and diamonds. The jewels were certainly glamorous, but they didn’t feel like “The Princess Diaries” star we know. Our theory? The outfit was all Carolina Herrera and none of Anne Hathaway.<\/p>\n

Anyone familiar with Herrera’s signature looks would instantly spot the glaring similarities between her personal aesthetic and what Hathaway wore. In fact, when speaking to the Daily Mail in 2018, Herrera advised, “Invest in a classic white blouse. I’ve always loved them. I wear them casually, and I wear them as part of an evening outfit.” The outlet even noted that one of Herrera’s signature looks includes a crisp white shirt, gray bottoms, and a chunky necklace.<\/p>\n

Need we say more? Of course, it’s expected, even appreciated, when designers weave their flair into custom looks. But the 2025 Met Gala was about unique colors, trends, and showcasing the individuality of the celebrity, not the stylist. In the end, Hathaway didn’t just wear Carolina Herrera; she became Carolina Herrera, and that’s the real fashion tragedy.<\/p>\n
