1994-1996: We met Jennifer Lopez with tight curls and dark tresses<\/h2>\n

Jennifer Lopez burst onto the music scene in the ’90s with gorgeous, dark ringlets. The up-and-coming star attended the premiere of “Mi Vida Loca”\u00a0in 1994 with tight, voluminous curls that gave us throwback ’80s vibes. She wore her lob-length strands in an effortless, down-to-earth side part. Two years later, she wore a very similar ‘do for an event at The Beverly Hilton Hotel,\u00a0where her hair was so dark it was almost black.<\/p>\n

Neither shade was totally natural though, as Lopez has been candid about coloring her locks. She told\u00a0People\u00a0in 2011 her strands started turning grey when she was 23. “I have to have [my roots] touched up every couple of weeks,” she said. But that didn’t stop her feeling as beautiful as she looked. And nor should it. Speaking to People over two decades later, Lopez admitted, “[I feel sexiest] when my hair is curly and I’m a little bit tan.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

After shooting to fame with ringlet curls, Jennifer Lopez was at the forefront of the super straight movement that dominated the early noughties. The “If You Had My Love” hitmaker rocked poker straight tresses at the 1999 Grammys\u00a0in a light, glossy brown. Her hairdresser left the ends blunt for an edgy and modern (at the time) finish, also adding trendy, chunky, blond highlights, which made a comeback in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the same event the following year, where\u00a0Lopez wore her sexiest red carpet look ever, we saw her flashy, sexy side come out. We saw another dramatic change from Jennifer Lopez in 2006. She wore her hair in slicked back bun \u2014 a look she’d go on to sport countless times over her career \u2014 at the Academy Awards. When the star started working with celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton, he revealed the secret to getting that smooth finish. “I used a large brush to pull back the hair into a tight ponytail, following the cheekbone up for placement, and secured with a bland elastic,” he told British Vogue in 2021 after doing the star’s hair for her performance at Joe Biden’s inauguration.<\/p>\n

Towards the end of 2016 though, Lopez went sleek in a different way when she let her dark locks down. At the 2nd Annual Noche De Ninos, she wowed with an extremely long, straight mane that stretched down her back in a simple yet chic center part. Jennifer Lopez proved she’s a celeb who looks gorgeous with her natural hair in 2016 when she gave Harley, her character in the NBC cop drama “Shades of Blue,” her signature curls. Embracing natural meant taking out the extensions that had become part of her Lopez’ look, but she didn’t mind. “I thought, ‘Growing up in the Bronx, if I became a cop, what would I look like right now? My hair would still be curly, I’d have cut it,'” she explained to\u00a0Entertainment Weekly.\u00a0The show’s hairstylist Juan Carlos Maciques also dished on the inspiration to People, sharing, “She wanted her look to be relatable, yet still sexy. She was so embracing of her natural curls \u2014 she rarely wears her natural texture, so she loved it.” And so did we.<\/p>\n

Lopez had also started wearing her hair lighter than in the earlier years of her career, which was thanks to her colorist Rita Hazan. “I felt like [dark] was too harsh for her skin tone and her personality,” she told Glamour in 2014. “I created a honey-highlighted hair color for her and people went crazy over it. I gave her a chocolate base with golden blond highlights.”<\/p>\n

But the “Let’s Get Loud” singer wasn’t only into wavy lobs in 2016. After going short and shaggy for “Shades of Blue,” Jennifer Lopez changed things up dramatically in 2019. She started the year with long, celebrity-esque curls with plenty of volume, showing her hair-ography while performing at the 2019 Grammys.\u00a0Her thick, light brown mane cascaded over her shoulders while giving us over 40 salon inspo.<\/p>\n

But, as fall came around, she made a stunning leap from long hair to short\u00a0via a chic, blond bob, the same look she sported in the rom-com “Marry Me.” During an appearance on “Despierta America” in September 2019, Lopez wowed with the light, shoulder skimming style in a center part. It was created by Chris Appleton, who told Allure, “[I] wanted it to be longer and not as serious as a bob, but still shorter. I cut it with a razor because I didn’t want it to be perfectly sleek \u2014 I wanted it to have some sexiness.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Jennifer Lopez was over the bob movement by 2023 and ready to bring back some light, length \u2014 and bangs! That June, she posted a gorgeous Instagram selfie rocking a choppy, full version of the style we hadn’t seen from her before. Her overall tone was darker, but she didn’t go too far as she added flattering, caramel highlights. She also appeared to add extensions for texture, as her healthy waves stretched down past her chest.<\/p>\n

But the bangin’ look (which may have been clip in bangs, which she’d tried before) didn’t last too long. That November, she wowed us with slightly lighter tresses but swapped bangs for the bare, bronzed forehead she’d sported most of her career. The multi-hyphenate kept the voluminous extensions and her hair looked impossibly glossy as she walked the red carpet for an\u00a0Eastern Congo Initiative Poker\u00a0event, demonstrating a flattering cut for women over 50.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Jennifer Lopez’s “Shades of Blue” character wasn’t the only one she leant her curls to. In 2024, J-Lo’s natural aesthetic was back\u00a0for “Atlas.” The star played Atlas Shepherd in the Netflix movie and told Remezcla\u00a0that year of keeping her hair au naturel, “I like [Atlas] having this disheveled, very thick head of hair that she doesn’t really worry about at all.” She added she wanted an un-styled look as a nod to Atlas’ upbringing. “[Her curls] were a reflection of not really paying attention to herself the way she wasn’t paid attention to as a child,” she shared.<\/p>\n

After filming, Lopez returned to a more familiar look. Though darker dyes are usually a go-to as winter approaches, a gorgeous November Instagram upload showed J-Lo with light brown locks and bright highlights. “She’s the perfect example of appearing blonde without veering into ashy tones that can make you look washed out,” celebrity hairstylist, colorist, and salon owner Gustav Fouche told Good Housekeeping U.K.\u00a0“Keeping a darker root softens the blonde, making it look a lot more chic,” they added. Lopez also showed us how to do curtain bangs at any length with longer strands either side of her face that were very flattering.<\/p>\n

The only thing left for J-Lo to do? Follow through on her tease she might one day rock her gray hair with confidence. “I’m kind of tempted to one day just let it go.
